Last of the Summer Fun

It is early September, the busy schedule of festas and fieras has calmed down as  the Italians have returned to work and the children are preparing for the new school term which starts next week.

There are still three outstanding occasions that I have not had an opportunity to feature yet this year. As they have all featured before I will group them altogether in this post. For those that are interested in fuller accounts, maybe the newer followers amongst you who have not heard about these events before, I will include links back to my previous posts.

Firstly the 28th and 29th of July is when Marta celebrates its Saints Day. On the evening of the 28th there is the 'Santa Marta Processione con le barche - Santa Marta Procession with boats'. The celebrations start with a simultaneous lake and street procession along the streets of Marta culminating with a service and blessing. The following day is a local bank holiday with a market during the day and to round the festivities off a grand firework display at 11pm.

These photos and the rest I took that evening can be viewed in the following short slideshow.

My Flickr Album from this year Santa Marta Processione
The link will take you to my post from last year Santa Marta 2011
The following evening I did not take my camera to the Firework Display but I am able to share those of my friend the Marta Weatherman. He recorded the evening in four parts, I have just posted the first part here, please visit his YouTube channel to view the rest.

The following weekend was Festa del Pescatore - Festa of Fishermen also in Marta. This event is held along side the lake in Marta in the park and as you can see from the flags is considered an international event. Table and chairs are set up under the trees along the lakeside, near the harbour and one of the local fish distribution companies provides the meals. For two consecutive evenings they cook a fish supper for anyone that cares to join the long queues that form. There is music and dancing and all age groups enjoy the evening.

These photos and the rest I took that evening can be viewed in the following short slideshow.

My photos can also be viewed in My Flickr.com Album Festa del Pescatore

You can read more about this event by visiting my previous posts. Festa del Pescatore 2009  and Festa del Pescatore 2010

Finally during the first two weeks of August Montefiascone celebrated the 54th Fiera del Vino

These photos and the rest I took that evening can be viewed in the following short slideshow.

My photos can also be viewed in My Flickr.com Album Montefiascone 54a Fiera del Vino

Summer is over for another year but hopefully we will now have a long Autumn with mild and sunny weather. We can now look forward to attending some seasonal festas, mushrooms, chestnuts, wine and olives before the end of the year.

  2. How fun to enjoy this wonderful culture! I don't travel much anymore since my husband retired from the military so it is great to "travel" through wonderful photos like you have here.

  3. Hello:
These kinds of celebrations, which we regard as essentially Continental, perhaps always belonging to Catholic countries, are such great fun, the essence of which you have certainly caught in your images and miniature slideshows. And yes, we now have what promises to be a wonderful autumn to look forward to.

  4. I love summer holidays! The fiestas in each little town... here in Spain if you wanted you could spend all summer partying, just going every weekend to a different town! Somehow they've all got their patron saints on different weekends! a few do coïncide, making it hard to choose between them) ;o)

    These look lovely! :o)

  8. There seems to be so many festivals and causes for celebration in Italy. I am curious after looking at the wine festival photos...is California wine sold in Italy as Italian wines are sold here in the US?

  46. I would so love to be able to attend an Italian festa or festival. I have only viewed one and that was in New York City. I was mesmerized by the parade and if I recall correctly, it was a festival honoring the mother Mary. Seeing one in Italy would be incredible!

  48. So happy to find your blog. I took my first trip to Italy last January and am planning for a return trip as soon as possible. I have a blog about a small town on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. Click over and see me sometime!

  49. I have enjoyed the images of the three festivals, all of which are my cup of tea exactly. I do love the processions of local Saints through villages, I have fond memories of my time spent living in Puglia of similar sights.

The Festa del Pescatore and the Fiera del Vino have my mouth watering, literally.

I feel soooo deprived that I have not been able to visit my beloved Italia for my annual "fix" but thanks to blogs such as yours, the pain is lessened! X

  50. Living near an expanse of water must give an added enjoyable dimension to your local festivals. We shall be travelling to Italy on the day of a major village festival so look forward to an entertaining evening with fireworks.
