San Pellegrino in Fiore

San Pellegrino in Fiore is an Annual Show which takes place in the the narrow streets of the medieval quarter of Viterbo. Local businesses mainly of a floral nature, although some shop keepers and B and B proprietors do participate, decorate the squares, streets and stairways with floral displays.

It has been noticeable in recent years that the recession has taken its toll and that displays are not as lavish as they used to be, however it is still worth visiting as a lot of work goes into the event.  It is not just a flower display but a chance to purchase plants, local produce and the work of local artists and other artisans.

We visited this year on Sunday afternoon May 1st, we had an enjoyable stroll around the centro storico and I took some reasonable photos, certainly enough to find a selection to share here and if you are interested the full album can be viewed on Flickr.com in my album entitled    San Pellegrino InFiore

Azaleas in forecourt of Commune (Council) Offices in Viterbo

Cacti are very popular.

A little colour brightens up a communal washing area in the centro storico.

Fruit and Vegetables.

These Romano Cauliflowers are not just beautiful to look at, but tasty as well!

I am looking for an old ladder to try this idea myself!

Even some of the fountains had been decorated, this is just one example, there is another one in my Flickr Album.  San Pellegrino InFiore

Rhododendron

We were tempted by the many beautiful Clematis for sale, but our garden is just too exposed. In fact many of our plants have suffered wind burn recently so really glad we did not succumb to the temptation to bring one home with us.

Clematis such a beauty.

If you would like to see more then please visit San Pellegrino InFiore or I have featured this Festa on News From Italy before the previous post is to be found at  San Pellegrino in Fiore 2010

  3. These photos are beautiful, I love the fruit and vegetable decorations. My azaleas are looking very sad this year just not enough water. We have had pretty much no rain at all since the end of March and it just gets hotter and hotter! By the way my cherries are almost over! Diane

  8. What a delightful post. I try to imagine what it would be like to turn to my husband and say..."Why don't we pop over to Viterbo and see the Flower Festival." We spent a wonderful, cold and windy day there a few years ago. You are living my dream. Thanks for sharing. And...I like the ladder idea as well.

Can't wait. Have visited Italy twice and have been to Viterbo. Your pics of the azaelas blew me away. What a wonderful site it must have been.

I've followed you and will be looking forward to reading more of your posts. I have a travel blog at http://laussiestravelblog.blogspot.com and a Paris blog, plus a writing blog and more. I also collaborate on a book review blog so I'll be going over now to check out on some of your reviews. I've just reviewed Death in the Dordogne on my Paris blog.

Ah, I feel like I have been on vacation by looking at your photos... it has also made me miss Spain, much, much more!

  49. You did a splendid job capturing your day at the fair. The azaleas are stunning as are the clematis. I just planted a clematis and it's not doing very well. I paid $25 for it and it's quite large but I think it may have suffered from some cold or else too much water. Your photos are just beautiful and I loved visiting Italy through your blog. Thanks for sharing and for your sweet comment on Cottage and Creek. I've been having a hard time keeping up with blogging lately so I appreciate your support!

  51. Great pictures as usual. I have to look and see if our regular cauliflower close-up is as pretty as that. I don't think I have actually bothered looking at it:

  52. Your pictures are so nice I feel like I was there too. My favorite is the ladder with the flower pots hanging on it. What a great idea! Nancy H

  53. Great photos. I'm not keen on cacti, mainly because I'm a clutz and end up with spines in me. That fruit and veg looks scrummy.

  56. What a wonderful festival to go to! I love each of your photos, especially the public watering area, the dripping fountain, the perfectly lined up fruits and veggies, and the lime-green, chartreuse cauliflower! But like you, I LOVE the ladder display of flowers and am going to keep my eye out for one in order to do the same!
