Sunday Song – Amy Winehouse Tribute

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was a British singer-songwriter known for her powerful voice and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz.

Sad and shocking but not a total surprise Amy Winehouse was found dead in her home in Camden, London yesterday afternoon July 24th 2011. She was popular in Italy which is why I decided to pay tribute to her today with a Sunday Song.

The disturbed but talented singer has had a turbulent career in recent years, surely the pressures of fame contributed to her depression and drug problems.

Last weekend she had been due to appear at the lLucca Summer Festival 2011 but the date was cancelled due to health problems, after her recent Belgrade performance when she appeared to be drunk on stage.

Amy Winehouse was just 27 years old as were all these other artists when they died, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones just tragic coincidences I am sure but still one that makes me shiver.

Amy Winehouse may not be among my favourite musicians but she had a huge talent and it is extremely sad that she was never able to find peace whilst alive with her talent or success.  She led a rollercoaster life style that was destined to end in tragedy but she will live on in music history.

  1. You summed her up beautifully Linda; she was a disturbed but talented singer and she really did have such a sad life. I have only heard a few of her songs so I will have to spend some time listening to all of these. Thanks for finding them all and for sharing them for Sunday Song.

It sure has been a traumatic and sad weekend for so many...

    Best wishes,
    Natasha.

  2. I'm glad you wrote this. It's horrific news. She was immensely gifted. While I didn't understand her unhealthy lifestyle choices, I respected her talent.
It's just so sad and such a waste. She was so young.
On a happy note: I always enjoy all your harvest/fruit posts!!!

    Hugs/blessings,
    Lana

  4. The album Back to Black is a classic. Terribly sad that Amy never finished the follow up. Her image was diminished to a cartoon by the tabloids in the end. Unlike most celebs, she did actually have talent, however.

  5. So sad, although practically predictable. What a pity.

  6. I was shocked by this news yesterday. Your video clips reminded me that Amy had such a rare talent and was a gifted artist. Sadly she also had her demons. A very sad day for all those she leaves behind, her family, friends and fans.

  7. Sad news, Lindy. I was shocked to hear the news last night. Thank you for sharing the video clips. Sorry had to delete my previous comment - I was too tired when I posted it, it was full of typo. :( Hope you are well.

  8. Thank you for posting these exceptional songs.
It was easy to forget Amy as nothing more than a drugged out has-been no thanks to her addictions and the media.
So sad to have lost yet another amazingly talented artist and unique voice from the world.
Such a shame that these wonderfully gifted souls are usually equally troubled in life as well.
We can only hope she's found eternal peace in the arms of angels tonight.

  9. I stumbled upon Amy Winehouse earlier in her career and really enjoyed her music. When her lifestyle got in the way of that I became disenchanted by her. It's always sad to see someone self-destruct.

  10. She had a lovely voice. Such a shame that she got lost in her life and self-destructed.

  15. I have to admit that I haven't heard of her. She has a nice jazzy tune to her voice and she'd be well welcomed in New Orleans with her style. I'm so sorry to hear about talent being lost.... so very sad.

  16. Thank you for posting these, Linda. So very sad and one of the saddest things is, as you say, it was not wholly unexpected. I remember reading a few years ago how worried her mother was that this was going to happen.

  17. Just reading that sent a shiver down my spine. Her sudden and unexpected death is a great loss.

  18. An appropriate and honest tribute. Such a sad end.

  19. This was a really great tribute post. I was not a fan but still she obviously had a talent and couldn't handle the fame and lack of privacy that came with it like most of the others who also passed at 27. So sad. Now that I'm 50, 27 is so young and you just don't realize it at the time do you?

  20. How kind of you to post about her untimely death. You have to wonder when these celebrities will learn from the others who have passed on. Yet they traveled down the same tortured path. Her poor family. What a waste.

  21. I loved her song "Back to Black". Lovely tribute today Linda. So sad to think that she had all that talent, only to end up dead at 27. All her life was before her really but, as you say, not totally unexpected in view of her lifestyle over the past few years. Still very sad, and tragic for her family.

  23. I was shocked to hear this news. I did not realize she was only 27 years old. Amy Winehouse had a rather unique deep, raspy voice and it is interesting that when people talk of another women singer which has a deep, raspy voice, they would often refer to that singer as having an "Amy Winehouse-like voice." As an example, I recently saw such a comparison being made with Giusy Ferreri, a singer from Sicily. It's sad that so many artists dies early in their careers.

  25. Beautiful tribute, Lindy. I really didn't know her music, but I was always reading about her on the gossip sites. When I saw she was dead at 27 I immediately thought of the 27 Club--those other famous musicians who died at the same age. So sad. Such a beautiful, talented soul gone too soon. May she now rest in peace.
