Birds in Our Garden - Uccelli nel Nostro Giardino

Common Cuckoo
Nightingale
Golden Oriole

House Sparrow
European Magpie
I had been hoping to get some more photos of the birds that frequent our garden before writing this post, but it is not going to happen so I decided to go ahead anyway. I can always post more photos at a later date if I get lucky, which somehow I doubt they never stay still long enough or they hide from us.

Our Garden is frequented by many different species of birds, which we mainly appreciate, except for the far too many sparrows that seem to think our roof is the best local hotel! They seem to be with us all year but the first of our annual visitors is the maybe not so welcome Cuckoo. I do not like the way they prey on the nests of other birds but I do like to hear him every Spring. For one thing it means Spring is here and for the other a superstitious saying that I learnt from an elderly gentleman in the uk many years ago, is that you must hear a cuckoo to ensure you will live to see another Spring!

The chorus especially earlier in the summer often started with the Nightingale in the middle of the night, no surprise how this little bird got his name! We have never managed to see either the Nightingale or the Golden Oriole but we know they are present as they have distinctive songs. The Golden Oriole we have caught flashes of colour as he flies through the walnut tree.

Another visitor that we do actually see around the garden fairly frequently is the Green Woodpecker, I have not got any good photos of him this year, the photo included was taken last year.

Green Woodpecker  - Our Garden Spring 2011
Our Swallow Family - July 2011
The Swallows are annual visitors as they have a nest they return to in our cantina every year, it is always lovely to see them.

The Hoopoe ( Upupa Epops) is I think my favourite visitor of the season, maybe because I get to see him fairly often in the garden. Although rarely does he give me the chance to capture a photo as good as this one!

Taken June 27th 2012

The idea for this post came from blogging friends in France who write Chez Charnizay when they posted about the birds visiting their garden here.

The little photos at the beginning of the post are courtesy of Wikipedia but the others are my own.

If you are interested in checking out the bird songs this is an excellent place to do so. Bird Songs From Europe.

I know the title of this post is Birds In Our Garden but I could not resist sharing these photos of a man who lives in Marta with his pet crow! I took these on June 28th 2012, he rescued this bird and is taming it.

  1. Wow, I love all your birds. The Oriole and the Green woodpecker are two of my favorites. Neat shots of the man and his pet crow. Thanks for sharing your birds. Have a wonderful day.

  3. Hi Lindy! I love birds, but I have to admit, I have never seen anything as beautiful Oriole in Italy, not even outside our house in Cilento, which was built above a valley, overlooking the sea. The whole area is a conservation area. I can't be looking that hard! We do get some really big birds, which look like small eagles. The have huge wings and are really beautiful to look at. Little song birds... not many! The sound which wakes us up, every morning, is that of a cockerel which must be hen pecked and going through a breakdown: sounds like someone is wringing his neck! Not very nice, or happy, at all!

What I do love, are the reptiles, very beautiful and colourful. I don't even mind having a baby lizard in the bathroom, I like them so much!

I like the photos of the Marta "birdman!" Us Italian love birds very much. When I was little we used to keep them and we had one, Ringo, who would fly round our living room and come to you, when you called his name!

    CIAO!
Off to Italy in a few days!

  4. Oh...how I love all of your birds! I've been taking bird pictures this morning at the lake house but they're nothing like yours. They're beautiful!

  5. We love to bird watch here in Kansas...we have several bird feeders we can see outside our dining room. Your photos are all so lovely! And I love your new Banner! What a garden you have!

I am thinking of Stacey with Magic Crow Love...she would love your shot of the pet crow. Who knew crows could be a pet? :)

  6. You must have a very "bird friendly" yard. How delightful to see such a variety. We seem to have mainly crows and we think they are taking over the world. The past year they got all but about 7 of my fava bean seeds and I was rip-roaring angry!!

  7. Lovely post and absolutely beautiful photos!
I apologize for being so busy and not having enough time to make a visit on the blogs that I follow. We are planning our daughter's wedding and that keeps us very busy. Have a great week!

  10. Hi Linda. Lovely photos of quite an assortment of birds for us today! We have the Hoopoe in our garden as well. We didn't know what it was, until we looked it up. I must try to capture some of the birds that we get in our own garden!
The Golden Oriole is quite beautiful. Hope you're enjoying your company. My family arrive from France late on Sunday, so I'm praying that this rain will go away for a while!

  17. Hi, Lindy. I'm catching up with your news while still waiting for a new and better laptop!
It's fascinating to see the variety of birds attracted to your garden. We love the swallows when they fly around in the evening and settle in a row on the overhead cable.
    Have a good weekend!

  20. Funny, I've been thinking of doing a blog post about the birds in my garden. You've inspired me! (I'll try to remember to comment here when mine is done!). I love the Hoopoe, it is very different from anything we have here in Oregon, US.

  21. We see a different variety of birds in Lazio to the ones here in Scotland which is lovely. I'd really like to have bird feeders in both places but in Italy we don't really encourage the birds into the garden as we also get the hunters during the season.

  22. Wow! Some of those birds look SO exotic to me...wonderful captures!

  23. The birds are so different than the ones here in the states! How pretty some of them are.

  24. You have quite a variety of bird visiting your garden - far more than we have here, but we do not encourage them to visit our garden as we had problems with birds nesting on the cottage.

  25. Lucky, lucky you. I would love to get more feathered visitors.

  26. We have 6 Magpies who regularly visit our garden though it hasn't brought me any gold so far. I think I'd prefer another one to pop along so I can have a secret never to be told which would be far more entertaining!

I'm intrigued by the photo of the chap who is taming a crow, what an unusual hobby!

  27. Wow you have some beautiful birds in your garden. We have been enjoying our bird garden, we have had several new subeditors this year. How wonderful about this man and his crow. xo

  28. Hi LindyLou! How could I not know about your photo blog? Or that you're a librarian (me too!)? - like your reading blog. This has been a great morning of discovery, beginning with so many of your lovely photos - the birds are a treasure. We hear them but rarely see them here (except those gutter-dwelling sparrows - nothing like a good tussle in the house gutter at 6 a.m.).

  30. We used to have lots of birds here around, but now you can count them on one hand ! I think it is due to the magpies and crows, they eat the little birds and then each house has at least a cat. somtimes I see a robin or I can hear a woodpecker.

  31. What a wonderful post this is, and I love the colours of the birds (I am not so great on identifying them so thank you for that).

And I like that you included the man and his crow, how fascinating. I am working on a painting of four swans, which represent the four children of Lir - an Irish legend of a King whose children were turned into swans for 900 years.

  32. Wonderful photos. I really like them all. What great photos of birds, I really like the two sparrows. Greetings and good week.

  33. You have a lot of great birds in your garden! And it is so beautiful there (I love your header shot) one can't blame them for wanting to make it their home! A lovely post. The neighbor is having fun teaching the crow! Fun pictures.

  35. An amazing variety of birds, Linda, and great photos! We have many birds but I am hopeless at capturing images of them.

Not sure about the crow as a pet. Here we chase them away as they are so annoying. :)

  36. Oh, they are so lovely. I like the oriole best.

  37. Awesome shots lindy. I love this magpie and the golden oriole. What gorgeous birds. How interesting also to have a pet crow. Would be interested in hearing more about this bird and the gentleman who is training it. Very interesting. Have a great day

  39. My mom has a parakeet and it comes over to stay with us some times. Noisiest bird ever and I told mom we dont need one because there are always so many birds in the garden because we have many water ponds, with fishes...So, they try to catch their lunch there at times. Great shots :)
