Mushrooms, Toadstools, Fungi, Funghi.

Mushrooms, Toadstools, Fungi, Funghi, whatever you know them as, many varieties are poisonous and in Italy it is advisable to take them to your local Health authority for identification before even considering eating them. In fact local authorities often run courses on identifying them, so surely it is better to be safe than sorry.

I read a newspaper article on line recently which had the following to say:
'On October 22 an entire family (father, mother and daughter) died after eating poisonous mushrooms. In Italy there are between 600 and 1,300 cases every year of poisoning.

For this reason Health Minister Renato Balduzzi warned recently that to avoid unnecessary risks, people should always bring picked mushrooms to experts for examination before eating them'.

The full article can be read by following the link.
Poisonous mushrooms destroy liver and kill!

This is why we do not risk eating mushrooms from our garden!  Apart from these which we are 200% sure about but even then we will only consume if they are freshly picked.

According to Wikipedia  A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

In the last few weeks there have been an abundance of many different varieties to be found in our garden, some are weird and wonderful, others extremely ugly, or even a little rude!  I will share the photos here with you but no names as I do not want to be presumptuous enough to consider that I might be able to identify them correctly!

I hope you find them as fascinating as I did when I was photographing them. The photos should enlarge if you click on them individually, for a closer look!

The next three photos are of the same fungus taken over a three day period, firstly day one emerging.

Three days later it was looking like this and appeared to be very attractive to flies!

The same variety collapsed and decaying a few days later.

Finally I want  to try and give you an idea of the size of some of these specimens.

Please remember do not go foraging for mushrooms without sound advice, as many are killers!

I am very excited to announce that News From Italy has been accepted by Expatblogs.com as a contender for one of their awards. May I please ask you to leave a comment there about News From Italy? This would be very much appreciated and help to improve my blogs rating.

Thanks lovely followers. :)

I have also shared the photo below on my photography blog today, LindyLouMac's World in Photographs but I know that not all of you have time to call by there very often, so sharing here as well.

An Autumnal favourite of ours, that we were able to enjoy freshly roasted in an open fire over the weekend.

Swallowtails in the Lucerne

No Swallowtail but there is another insect!

One recent afternoon I spent some time happily chasing Swallowtail Butterflies amongst the Lucerne in our garden trying to get some photos.

Wikipedia tells me that those of you that do not live in the UK, Australia, South Africa or New Zealand, will know this plant as Alfalfa  a perennial flowering plant in the pea family, cultivated as an important forage crop in the US, Canada, Argentina, France, Australia, the Middle East, South Africa, and many other countries.

I did not manage to get any really good close up shots as they did not stay still long enough for the time it takes me to get organised, therefore each photo seems to be missing a piece of butterfly! However I did manage to capture a series of photographs that I felt were worth sharing with you here today.

Do remember that you should be able to enlarge the photos just by clicking on them, or if this does not work you can do so via My Flickr.com album. Swallowtails in the Lucerne which contains the full set of photos.

This post today is instead of my end of the month Our Garden post as due to the drought conditions we have had this summer I have not taken as many photos as normal, certainly nothing showing much produce, a few fruit and nut close ups, plus some colourful flower macros, but no general views. When I looked back at last year's post I was surprised that we thought the garden was not doing well, except for the fruit! This year even the fruit has not been abundant, take a look at this old post if you are curious Our Garden in August 2011.

If you really want to see a few photos from the garden this month please visit the following link on Flickr.com. Our Garden in August 2012

With cracks in the earth like this one, it is no surprise that nothing much is growing!

As I write this post we have just hit the three months without rain mark, then this afternoon the 26th of August we thought we were going to get a storm, but after just ten minutes of heavy rain the skies cleared and the sun is out again. Hardly enough to settle the dust!
.

Update: 30th of August - Our local weather forecast says this will be the last day of the intense heat of summer, with an unsettled weekend ahead. I am off to make the most of it and hunt some more butterflies, have a good weekend everyone.

Our Garden in June and July - Il Nostro Giardino in Giugno e Luglio

July 13th 2012
It has been an exceptionally hot and dry summer in Italy this year, what a year of extremes it has been in fact!  We have virtually given up on our orto (vegetable garden) this summer as despite copious watering it is a disaster. Yes I hear some of you saying how can you be watering when there is a drought order and hosepipe ban in place. No problem we are fortunate enough to have our own well and this is how we have managed to keep some colour in our garden. The plants that have survived are mainly ones that can do without huge amounts of water, any water loving or cooler weather plants that were ok at the beginning of June have long since given up the fight for survival. The plants that are now providing us with colour are almost without exception our container ones.

I have shared a few photos individually but I have also included slideshows for those who have the time and the inclination to view. Transporting you to our garden in Italy for just a few minutes is the aim as always, which I hope to have achieved again today.

As you can see from the above photos we have enjoyed a good selection of fruit this summer.
Geraniums
Magnolia
Bears Breeches
Persian Acacia
Some  of our June Colour was provided by Geraniums, Bears Breeches and the Persian Acacia and Magnolia Trees.

Our July colour is thanks to our pots!
Finally a favourite photo of mine from this month is this Purple Hibiscus that I am also posting for a meme on my photography blog today.  LindyLouMac's World in Photos

The second slideshow is much shorter as the drought has meant there has not been much variety or change in the plants since last month, apart from growth, so if you are short of time this is the one to watch!

Our Garden in May - Il Nostro Giardino in Maggio

Thankyou for the comments on my latest header which was taken in our garden last month, it is also the first photo in this post. As so many of you seem to enjoy my garden posts, looking at the statistics I am surprised how many, I decided that I should not skip my monthly garden post which I was planning to do. Better late than never it seems and it will let you see what a wonderful month May was for the garden in Italy. I think one of the best, especially this year when it did look rather lovely, but then I am bias and I just love roses which take centre stage this month.

I will share some photos individually but I have also included a slideshow for those who have the time and the inclination to view. Transporting you to Italy for just a few minutes is the aim as always, which I hope to have achieved again today.
