Mudslide in Calabria

MAIERATO IN CALABRIA FRANA LA MONTAGNA ITALIA

Yesterday morning there was another natural disaster, not on the scale of the earthquake in Haiti but no less devastating for those involved. A mudslide in the the village of Maierato in Calabria, Southern Italy. It left the village without any services, such as water, electricity etc and in the region of 2,000 inhabitants had to be evacuated.

This region is apparently prone to such landslips, but the amount of rain that has fallen over the last few months has made the area particularly susceptible.

The video I am posting is fromYou Tube and it shows just how terrifying it must have been to have viewed this from such close proximity. It is just like an avalanche but instead of snow in mud, truly horrendous.

My thoughts go out to all those effected by this disaster in which thankfully, as far as I have been able to ascertain no one was hurt, a miracle in itself

To my friends who live in Calabria, stay safe.

  1. Last night on RAI news was a graphic of the parts of Italy that could be prone to this type of slide.  It appeared to be about 3/4 of the country.  I have actually been worrying about that happening across the valley from us since so many trees have been cut.

  2. Scary stuff. My cousin was caught in an avalanche a few years ago - luckily he ended up with his head above the snow level, but he said it was terrifying. Very glad to hear that everyone's safe this time.

  3. Wow. The land looks like a rushing river. I got chills watching it. How terrifying to actually be there. Amazing that there were no casualties.

  5. We've had mudslides here just about every year since I've lived here (going on seven), but *nothing* like what happened there, thank goodness. Ours just usually closes the main road for a little while. Very sad as yes, a lot of Italy is prone to this :(

  6. Very sad for everyone in Calabria, but also for Italy, with all that happened last year. I pray that all our friends are safe too!

  7. I saw the clip again last night on the news, and each time it always shocks the heck out of me. Just seeing that whole section of earth moving like that!

Thank you for stopping by (always nice to discover another expat here in Italy). I had to laugh at your World Nutella post because I, too, prefer marmite of Nutella (hate the stuff!). Buona giornata!

  11. Thankyou everyone for your comments and welcome to the new readers amongst you.

Sadly these mudslides are something that happen here in Italy every winter. However like Michelle has mentioned this very wet winter has caused the worst we have seen in our six years living here.

  12. Horrendous, that was a major slide and makes be a bit worried for our house in Lazio as its on the side of the mountain. I expect we would have heard if there had been any problems. A blessing that everyone was safe, lets hope life gets back to normal soon.

  13. I saw this in the news. Must have been terrible. And as you say, a miracle that no-one was killed. Italy really is having some bad times at present.

  14. Jenny, hope all is ok with your property, as you say you would soon hear, best not to think about such an event.

Louise, not just Italy the whole world seems to be having dreadful catastrophes. The most recent the flooding in Maderia.
