Think Pink–Breast Cancer Awareness in Italy–Friday Feature

Breast Cancer Awareness Month startedPink ribbons the official symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness since 1993.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all over the social media sites on the internet we are being reminded to Think Pink so it seemed a good idea to use the theme as my Friday Feature for this week.

I hope each and every one of you that reads this post will be able to do something this month to support Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness in what ever way you are able as it all counts.

The entire month is dedicated to spreading awareness and to raise funds to help find the causes of Breast Cancer, find a cure and with health and well being find ways of prevention. There are charities all over the world dedicated to this cause but as I live in Italy that is where I am focusing todays post on.

With the horrendously high statistics for Breast Cancer there can not be many of us reading this post whose life it has not impacted upon in some way or other, either personally or a friend or possibly a family member.  I have both family and friends that are Breast Cancer Survivors which is why this Think Pink Awareness Month is particularly dear to my heart.

Here are just a few of the statistics I discovered during my research, courtesy of various websites that I have listed at the end of this post.

It is estimated that in 2010 there will be 207,090 females and 1,970 males diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

A woman dies somewhere in the world every 69 seconds from Breast Cancer.

Every 2 minutes, there is a new Breast Cancer diagnosis.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was started  in 1985. The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, of  Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the Pink Ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize Breast Cancer. In the autumn of 1991, the Susan G Komen Foundation had handed out Pink Ribbons to participants in its New York City Race For Breast Cancer Survivors.

Here are a couple of songs that promote awareness.

The 2010 Pink Ribbon Marathon in Italy was held in Roma on May 16th 2010

This event is also known as Susan G. Komen Marathon for the Cure is a running event to offer participants the chance to raise funds in support of the fight against Breast Cancer.

More than 50,000 people participated in the fundraising race that marked 11th anniversary this year.  This event also takes place throughout the year in other Italian cities such as Bologna, Florence and Napoli, those are the ones that I know of.

I would also like to mention that all over the world on October 1st the Global Illumination of Landmarks in pink set a Guinness World Record thanks to the event organised by Estee Lauder. The full press release can be read here.  In Italy the building that participated was Il Biancone, Florence.

I am repeating what I said at the beginning of this post in that I hope each and every one of you that reads this will be able to do something this month to support Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness in what ever way you are able as it all counts.

So remember everyone Think Pink as I leave you with A Favourite Pink Rose from my Garden.

  12. Wonderful post about breast cancer LindyLouMac. As you say, it is so important to keep spreading the message so that, hopefully, we can beat this disease. What a beautiful pink rose. I have lots of variety of roses in my garden (mostly of the old-fashioned variety) but I would love to obtain this one. It is a stunning photograph by the way. Perhaps you could let me know the name of this particular rose. Thank you!

  13. Thisisme - Thankyou for your kind words. I am sure this rose will be a very old one and I just wish I was able to tell you the name. We moved to this house just eighteen months ago inheriting a very old and overgrown but once well loved garden, lots of roses but not a clue about the names, sorry.
